Gender and the labour market (summary)

The labour market's gender divide presents the following challenges:

  • Bottlenecks
  • An inflexible labour market
  • Men and women do not work together as colleagues, with the same education, and in the same workplaces: for example, 85 % of educators are women, but 94 % of people working in the trades are men
  • Unequal pay: Women earn on average 13-17 % less than men
  • Women work primarily in the public sector (more than 600,000 women), while men work in the private sector (more than 900,000 men)
  • Each gender's experience is not fully utilised in resolving work tasks
